Dies war die letzte Apollo Mission und auch das letzte Mal, als ein Mensch den Mond betreten hat. Der Kommandant Eugene A. Cernan und der Pilot der Mondlandefähre Harrison H. Schmitt verbrachten 75 Stunden auf dem Mond und erkundeten die bergige Region des Taurus-Littrow.
