Gemini 3 war der erste bemannte Raumflug des Gemini Programms. Während dieser Mission sollten die Zuverlässigkeit der Titan-Rakete und die Grenzen der Manövrierbarkeit des Gemini Raumschiffes in der Erdumlaufbahn erkundet werden. Virgil I. Grissom war einer der drei Erstbesatzungsmitglieder von der Apollo 1 Mission, die 1967 im tragischen Unfall ihr Leben verloren.
