Jacobsen hatte sich 1853 in Düsseldorf niedergelassen, von wo aus er zu Studienreisen nach Norwegen und Italien aufbrach. Zu seinen bis heute beliebtesten Motiven gehören skandinavische Winter- und venezianische Monscheinlandschaften, die er großformatig und in effektvoller Lichtregie zu inszenieren verstand.
