Huddled Cow II. Terracotta. Cut from an air-dryed piece of clay, covered in a light engobe and painted in a dark colour. Height c. 9.5 cm, breadth c. 13 cm. Stamped with the monogram at the lower back.

In den 1940er Jahren beschäftigt Mataré sich immer wieder mit dem Thema “Kuh”. Dabei strebte er eine “Formung ganz aus dem Symbolhaften (…) in dem die Natur nur versteckt ist” an (Schilling S. 38). Das Tier wird zum archaischen Objekt, in dem der Kopf und die Beine nur flach eingeritzt werden. Die Gesamtform des Werkes, geformt wie ein Stein, der angenehm und sicher in der Hand liegt, steht im Vordergrund. Die ovalen Hörner erscheinen wie ein Eindruck eines Daumens. Durch diese haptischen Qualitäten der Skulptur wird das Rind zu einem von Menschenhand geformten Naturgebilde. – In sehr gutem Zustand.
