Cowering Orang-Utan. Bronze with a darkbrown to black patina. (C. 1896). Height c. 11 cm. Signed and stamped with the foundry mark “H.Noack Berlin” on the plinth.

Posthumer Guss mit der höheren Plinthe. 1895 schickte der Leipziger Zoo seinen Orang-Utan Jumbo auf Reisen. Gaul sah ihn im Berliner Zoo und fertigte mehrere Großplastiken des Tieres an. Mit dieser kleinen Haltungsstudie beendete Gaul vorerst seine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Motiv. Erst um 1920 befasste er sich wieder mit dieser Tierart. In sehr gutem Zustand.
