Sketchbook. 62 pages containing pencil sketches, with grey wash (1) and heightened with white (7), on brownish and cream wove from “J WHATMAN TURKEY MILL 1825”. (18)30 (2). C. 26 : 20,5 cm. Half calf, spine. Some images dated (2) and/or annotated (4).
Description
Teils locker hingeworfene Skizzen, teils detailliert ausgearbeitete Studien von unterschiedlicher Thematik, darunter: Architektur-, Figur-, Landschafts-, Hunde-, Akt- und Kostümdarstellungen. Im Juli 1830 hielt sich Rethel den Bezeichnungen nach in der Umgebung von Schloss Linn bei Krefeld auf. Fasziniert von dem dort vorgefundenen Aufeinandertreffen von wild wuchernder Natur und halbverfallener Mittelalterarchitektur, entstanden malerische Studien und Skizzen ganz im Geiste der Romantik (u.a. S. 35, S. 41). Insgesamt etwas unfrisch und fleckig; Bll. teils umlaufend nachgedunkelt; 3 Bll. mit Papierverlust; die Bindung leicht gelockert, da bereits Bll. entnommen wurden.
Beiliegt: 33. Jahresgabe des Rheinischen Heimatbundes: Ein Skizzenbuch des Jungen Alfred Rethel, mit 46 Abb. Hrsg. J. Heinrich Schmidt, Druck und Verlag L. Schwann, Düsseldorf 1940. Etwas braunfleckig, sonst gut.
