Diese druckfrische Arbeit läßt erkennen, welch weiten Weg Chuck Close, einer der profiliertesten Portraitisten der amerikanischen Kunst, seit seinen Anfängen in den sechziger Jahren zurückgelegt hat. Begann er mit photorealistisch genauen, in Schwarz-Weiß ausgeführten übergroßen Köpfen, so verlieh er später seinem Pinselstrich ein immer größeres Eigenleben und steigerte seine Palette zu frischer Farbigkeit. In diesem “gekritzelten” Selbstbildnis nimmt der zunächst spontan wirkende Strich bei näherer Betrachtung den Charakter eines geordneten Musters an, das sich über die gesamte Bildfläche ausdehnt. – Mit vollständigem Büttenrand. Tadellos.
