Grützner’s monk paintings with their subject of merrily drinking old men were already extremely popular during the artist’s lifetime. The anecdotal, humoristic scenes are based on a strong naturalism of style: thus the old man’s wrinkles and fallen-in mouth are rendered in all detail. And yet the face radiates satisfaction and contentment.

Grützners Mönchsbilder mit ihren feucht-fröhlichen Motiven der trinkenden alten Herren erfreuten sich schon zu seinen Lebzeiten einer großen Beliebtheit. Diese anekdotischen und humorvollen Szenen leben von ihrem starken Naturalismus. So wird der alte Mann naturgetreu dargestellt; die zahlreichen Falten und der leicht eingefallene Mund werden genau herausgearbeitet, und doch strahlt das Gesicht eine Genugtuung und tiefe Zufriedenheit aus. Dabei entstand das Bild zu einer Zeit, in der der Künstler alles andere als Zufriedenheit und innere Ruhe verspüren konnte, da seine zweite Ehe mit seiner 17 Jahre jüngeren Frau vor dem Zusammenbruch stand.
