2 sheets: muscleman in profile stepping forward – muscleman from the back bending his arm. Brown ink, washed with grey ink on wove with watermark “Double circle with jar (?), globus cruciger and cross with letters HK”. 1699. Each c. 29.5 : 20.5 cm (sheet). Each signed and dated lower left. Framed.
Both drawings were probably intended for a whole series with images of musclemen. Presumably they were made after a wax model and were intended to be published in an anatomic volume.
Description
Interessante, wohl zu einer Folge gehörende Studien mit der Darstellung eines Muskelmanns aus zwei verschienenden Ansichten. Die Zeichnungen sind wahrscheinlich nach einem Wachsmodell gefertigt worden und waren wohl zur Publikation in einem anatomischen Werk gedacht. Eine vergleichbare Arbeit “Nackter Schwertkämpfer” mit entsprechender Bezeichnung befindet sich in der Albertina in Wien. (vgl.: Garzarolli-Thurnlackh. Die Zeichnungen der deutschen Schulen, Nr. 1106 mit Abb.). Stellenweise stockfleckig und an den Ecken fest ins Passepartout montiert, ansonsten altersgemäß gut erhalten.
