A wide landscape with two travellers on a road. Pen and brown ink on laid paper. (C. 1640). C. 19 : 26.5 cm. Framed. An imaginative, highly artistic drawing featuring the expressive rendering of trees very popular at the time, giving them an almost animated aspect. Guercino’s drawings were very sought after already during his life-time and formed part of most major collections from the 18th century onwards.

Landschaft in charakteristischer, virtuoser Strichführung mit den im 17. Jahrhundert besonders beliebten expressiven Darstellungen bizzarer Baumformationen. Guercinos einfallsreiche, malerische Zeichnungen erfreuten sich bereits zu seinen Lebzeiten großer Wertschätzung und waren im 18. Jahrhundert in fast allen größeren Sammlungen vertreten. Umlaufend mit Einfassungslinie in Schwarz. Alt auf Papier aufgezogen, dort verso mit der alten Bezeichnung in brauner Feder “Jean Francois Barbieri, dit le Guerchin / Ecole de Bologne”. Mit leichten Schäden durch Tintenfraß in den Schattenpartien. Nicholas Turner hat die Zuschreibung an Guercino bestätigt und die Datierung um 1640 vorgeschlagen.
