A tranquil composition with a fine balance of linear and painterly elements. Matisse, who had reached a new, free approach to colour during his stay in Collioure in 1905, was an important point of reference for Gaul throughout his life.

Meditatives Gemälde mit einer feinen Balance von zeichnerischen und malerischen Elementen. Bei allem Verzicht auf beschreibende Gegenständlichkeit beschwört Gaul durch Farben und Formen die Stimmung in der kleinen französischen Hafenstadt an einem verhangenen Januartag herauf. Matisse ist ein wichtiger, wenn auch nie offensichtlicher Bezugspunkt für das Schaffen von Winfred Gaul, der gerade im Spätwerk mit seinen fließenden Farben und graphischen Elementen wieder wirksam wird. Für Matisse war der Aufenthalt in Collioure im Jahr 1905 von großer Bedeutung, er fand dort zu neuer, freier Farbigkeit.
