Anders als die meisten anderen Pop-Art-Künstler lädt Jim Dine seine Motive – die er stets in Serien bearbeitet – meist mit einer persönlichen Bedeutung auf: “Pop Art is only one facet of my work. More than in popular images, I’m interested in personal images (…)”. (Jim Dine in: Art News, November 1963). Die ‘Robe’ gehört neben dem 100fach variierten Markenzeichen Jim Dines, dem Herz, zu den häufigsten und vor allem auch wichtigsten Motiven. Eine Untergattung, die “Bathrobe”-Serie verwendet Dine als verklausulierte Selbstbildnisse. Entsprechend lassen sich die anderen “Robe”-Variationen als Portraits verstehen, als Portraits von Einzelpersonen, oder von Personen die eine Gruppe oder eine bestimmte Lebenssituation repäsentieren. “A robe against the desert sky” hat eine dramatische, geradezu denkmalhafte Wirkung, wozu die düstere Farbpalette und der Bildtitel beitragen. Das seltene Blatt in sehr guter Erhaltung.
