William Wauer

1866 Oberwiesenthal/ Erzgebirge – West-Berlin 1962

After training at the academies in Dresden, Berlin and Munich, Wauer spent the years 1888 and 1889 in San Francisco and New York, before studying art history and philosophy in Leipzig for another semester. He initially worked mainly as a journalist and publisher. However, after attending the directing class at the acting school of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, he worked as a director for theatre and film. He first came to prominence as a sculptor, primarily of portrait busts, in 1918 in Herwarth Walden’s gallery “Der Sturm”. In the 1920s, he was involved in the Bauhaus and founded the “International Association of Expressionists, Cubists, Futurists and Constructivists”. Classified as “degenerate” by the National Socialists and banned from working from 1941, he was only able to continue his work after 1945. He now focussed on the visual arts and his work in adult education.
