Elvira Bach

1951 Neuenhain

Elvira Bach, born in 1951 in Neuenhain, is arguably among the most recognized German painters today. Associated with the Neue Wilde movement, Bach frequently draws upon the traditions of both modernism and antiquity, artists such as Frida Kahlo or non-European art. Thus, by examining the past, she is creating a new image of contemporary women and femininity. Throughout the years, the artist obtained her education at the University of Arts in Berlin (1972-9) under Hann Trier, later living and working in Africa, the Caribbean and Italy. Holding her debut solo show at the Metzgerei (1978) and SO36 (1979) in Berlin, Bach befriended artists such as Martin Kippenberger and Albert Oehlen. Included in the Documenta in Kassel (1982), she became recognized by the international audience, and instantly found curatorial recognition in London, New York and Paris. Presently her work is on view at the Galerie Linzergasse-Weihergut in Salzburg, Kunsthalle in Emden (until September 2015), and the Galerie Biesenbach in Cologne (until August 2015), and within the renowned collections of MoMA in New York, Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Museum of Art in Augsburg.
