– Characteristic flower arrangement in a rustic vase from the 1940s

– After returning to Murnau, Münter concentrated on motifs from her immediate surroundings, in particular flowers from her own garden

– Her works from this period are characterised by mature, artistic condensation with ornamental reduction

After her return to Murnau in 1931, Münter repeatedly painted flower still lifes, often in a folk-realist style. She not only drew inspiration from the plants in her own garden, but also bought flowers from the Müssig nursery. Here she buys the flowers unbound. She then arranged them artfully, but as naturally as possible, in glazed farmhouse vases. In the 1940s, the previously lavish flower arrangements became increasingly simple. Andreas Müssig, the owner’s grandson, remembers: “Münter loved flowers with strong colours. She loved the red poppies in the large bed and the zinnias with their slightly morbid colours and a radiance like old, coloured fabrics.” (in: Gabriele Münter, the time after Kandinsky in Murnau, Schloßmuseum, Murnau 2012, p. 150).

The grey, neutral background and the light tablecloth allow the colourful, bright flowers to stand out and shine.
