Untitled (IV) from 1974 illustrates Robert Rauschenberg’s interest in the aesthetic qualities of everyday materials. The almost monochrome color scheme is reminiscent of his revolutionary, minimalist White Paintings series from 1951. After Rauschenberg moved his primary home and work location from New York to Captiva, Florida in 1971 and traded the hustle and bustle of the city for a quieter environment, he experimented with ubiquitous materials like boxes and paper bags. Although “Untitled (IV)” is not assigned to a specific series of works, the work shares characteristics with Rauschenberg’s “Egyptian Series,” created the previous year.
