Alongside the works of Enrico Castellani and Agostino Bonalumi, the monochrome “moulded” canvases of Milanese artist Turi Simeti are today among the most important examples of an independent art movement that has its origins in the Italian ZERO movement. After meeting Alberto Burri in Rome at the end of the 1950s, Turi Simeti began painting as a self-taught artist and, after moving to Milan in 1965, joined a young generation of artists who all took part in the legendary “ZERO Avantgarde” exhibition in Lucio Fontana’s studio that same year. “Segno Giallo (Yellow Sign)” from 1971 is a characteristic and outstanding example of Turi Simeti’s oeuvre in every respect thanks to its perfectly balanced composition and minimalist use of colour.
