Indian ink, partly washed, on thin brownish wove. (1922). C. 43.5 : 32.5 cm (sheet). Signed with the monogram lower left. Inscribed with the title on the upper margin, as a part of the drawing. Framed. The clown seen as a tragic figure belongs to Rouault’s favourite topics. This drawing was executed as an illustration for Henry Church’s book “Les Clowns”, Paris 1922.

Vorlage für eine Illustration in “Les Clowns” von Henry Church, Paris 1922. Der Clown, und zwar der Clown als tragische Gestalt, manchmal sogar als ‘Alter Ego’ für Christus, gehört zu den Bildmotiven, die dem Künstler besonders am Herzen lagen. Insgesamt in sehr guter Erhaltung. Verso an den Blattkanten umlaufend Rückstände einer alten Klebestreifenmontierung, schwach nach vorne durchfettend. Einige kaum merkliche horizontale Knickfalten und wenige winzige Fleckchen in der Darstellung, ein kleiner Kratzer in der Nähe des rechten Blattrandes.
