Figure IV from the Apocalypse. A fine, crisp impression of the scare Edition of 1498 with German Text, trimmed to the borderlines.
Dürer divides the image section into two planes in order to unite the events of the opening of the fifth and sixth seals in one sheet. In the upper level of the picture, framed by a band of clouds, he depicts the distribution of the vestments to the martyrs under the altar (5th seal). Below this, the sun and moon accompany the opening of the sixth seal, which results in the falling of the stars (Acts 6:12-17). On the lower level, the victims of the flaming rain of stars kneel and try to protect themselves from it with their hands. – Minor, carefully and unobtrusively restored paper defects, otherwise in good condition.
