Descrizione
In einem Brief an Sir John Stirling-Maxwell beschreibt Duncan das Motiv wie folgt: “I meant it for Man against Super Man – The Blonde Beast – Monster of arrogance and pride. Humanity confronting huge, over-armed powers, (…)” (zit. in: Kemplay, S. 92). Für Duncan stellte das Gemälde auch kompositorisch eine Herausforderung dar, er schuf gleich drei Versionen dieses Werkes. Laut der Kuratorin Dr. Helen Scott handelt es sich hier wohl um diese dritte Version, die beiden anderen befinden sich in Museen in Edinburgh und Glasgow.
