Alkyd on cut out steel. (1985/2004). C. 30 : 20 cm. One of a numbered edition of 25. Signed on the reverse by Claire Wesselmann (The estate of Tom Wesselmann). Wesselmann experimented with the possibilty of steel drawings since 1983. After an initial stage when it had to be cut out by hand, this was later done by laser. The present work manages to preserve the spontaneity of the artist’s drawing in spite of the technical process.

“Steel drawing”, nach einer gezeichneten Vorlage des Künstlers mit dem Laser aus einer Stahlplatte geschnitten. Wesselmann beschäftigte sich seit 1983 mit der Idee, seine Zeichnungen in Stahl umzusetzen: An der Wand sollte der Eindruck entstehen, als sei direkt darauf gezeichnet worden. Zunächst musste ein Assistent die Arbeiten per Hand aus der Stahlplatte schneiden, später geschah dies mit dem Laser. Das vorliegende Werk bewahrt trotz des technischen Herstellungsprozesses einen Eindruck der Spontaneität der Handschrift von Tom Wesselmann.
