Tacita Dean

1965 Canterbury

Tacita Dean was born in 1965 in Canterbury, UK. She is a British artist who works in film, photography, sound and installation. She completed her education at the Falmouth School of Art, the Supreme School of Fine Art in Athens, and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Though often associated with the Young British Artists and exhibited along with them, as at „General Release: Young British Artists” (the Venice Biennale, 1995), Dean is exploring slightly different concepts in comparison to other figures of British art of the 90s. The artist is interested in the examinaton of cinematography language, as it takes place in “Film” (2011), a silent 35mm piece shown in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern, a commissioned work for the famous Unilever Series. To give vent to her interests in land art, she conducted a research on the iconic “Spiral Jetty” and created a movie “JG Ballard, Robert Smithson and me” (2013). In the last years, Dean was included in almost every big group show. For dOCUMENTA(13) in Kassel (2012) Dean created “Fatigues”, a series of blackboard chalk landscapes. Her artistic accolades include the nomination for the Turner Prize in 1998 and the Grand Prix of Venice Biennale in 2005. She lives and works in Berlin. In recent years Dean’s work has been shown in all over the world, such as at the Kunsthaus Bregenz in 2019, the Marian Goodman Gallery and she presented a large solo show at the Mudam museum in Luxembourg in 2023.
