Private property, South Germany.
Description
Carl Spitzweg, known for his humorous, Biedermeier scenes, began to attract attention as a landscape painter as early as the 1830s. His earliest works, such as this view of the Brecherspitze in the Mangfallgebirge, probably painted around 1836-1840, show views of the surrounding countryside of Munich. With its striking pyramid-shaped structure, the peak reaches up into the cloudy, yet blue summer sky. A few metres below the ridge, a small snowfield can still be made out.
Confirmation of authenticity from Adolf Alt, Munich, dated 10 October 1934, on the reverse.
We would like to thank Detlef Rosenberger, Oberostendorf, for confirming the authenticity of the work.
