Description

“The world is invited into the studio. There it is taken apart, reassembled and sent outside again”.
With the title “Breathe”, William Kentridge created an artist’s book, the present series of drawings is the template for it. A dancer executed in black ink spins across the pages of the book. Kentridge appropriates a historical medium for his drawings, a Russian encyclopaedia from 1953. The paper partly illustrates machines or botanical contexts. A delightful tension is created between the woman dancing in powerful sweeps and the closely printed, sober pages of the encyclopaedia. Characteristic of William Kentridge is the transfer of his graphic work into cinematic animation. “Breathe” is also based on the principle of the flipbook, in which the encyclopaedia serves as a projection screen. The artist finds his subjects in the history and social circumstances of his native country, South Africa. William Kentridge is one of the most important contemporary artists internationally and has already had exhibitions at the MoMA in New York, the Louvre in Paris or the Whitechapel Gallery in London, most recently at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg.
