Bei vorliegender Landschaft handelt es sich nicht um das Abbild einer bestimmten geographischen Region, etwa des Elbtales, sondern um eine Landschaftsinvention, die in der Wertung der damaligen Kunsttheorie über der Prospekt- und Vedutenmalerei stand. Aus diesem Grund – weil es sich um eine Landschaftserfindung handelt – lautet die Beschriftung auch “inv. et pinx.” (und nicht etwa “pinx. ad naturam” oder “ad vivum”). Vergleichbare Werke sind im Katalog des Schlossmuseums Sondershausen (Hg.), “Wie über die Natur die Kunst des Pinsels steigt. Johann Alexander Thiele (1685–1752). Thüringer Prospekte und Ideallandschaften”, Weimar 2003, unter den Katalognummern 44, 46, 47, 47 und 51 zu finden.
Für seine Landschaftsinventionen orientierte sich der Künstler an Vorbildern unter den niederländischen Italianisanten.
