Description

Durch die Unterstützung seiner Mäzenin Emilie Linder war es Frey möglich, sich 1835 dauerhaft in Rom niederzulassen. Die Künstlergemeinschaft in der Nähe des Monte Pincio nahm ihn auf. In den heißen Sommermonaten unternahm er Ausflüge in die Campagna und fertigte vielerlei Pleinair-Studien an. 1836-38 etwa hielt er sich in Grottaferrata, Ariccia und Civitella auf, wo er das hügelige Gelände vorfand, das auf dieser Ölskizze gebannt ist.
