Description
Lucretia war von Sextus Tarquinius, dem Sohn des letzten römischen Königs Tarquinius Superbus, in ihrem Schlafgemach mit dem Schwert bedroht und missbraucht worden. Am nächsten Morgen rief Lucretia ihren Vater und ihren Mann Collatinus herbei und berichtete von der Untat, woraufhin die Männer Rache schworen. Um der Schmach zu entgehen, tötete sich Lucretia anschließend mit einem Dolch. Van der Werff erzählt nicht die Szene, in der Sextus Tarquinius Lucretia mit dem Dolch bedroht, sondern konzentriert sich auf das einsame Ringen mit ihrer Entscheidung, die als Ausdruck ihrer Stand- und Tugendhaftigkeit galt.
