Monk in the Campagna
Description
Carl Heinrich Steffeck, bekannt als Chronist von Sportereignissen und Pferdemaler, hielt sich seit 1840 zwei Jahre in Italien auf, wo er mit Landschaften und Szenen aus dem römischen Volksleben hervortrat. Zu letzteren zählt auch unser kleines humoriges Gemälde, in dem ein Mönch auf einem Esel versucht, durch die Campagna zu reiten. Gottvertrauen und tiefer Glaube – verkörpert durch die Silhouette St. Peters im Hintergrund und das Kreuz – können ihn jedoch nicht vor weltlichen Unglücken bewahren.
