Description
Der aus Mainz stammende Künstler Caesar Metz siedelte nach seinem Studium an der Städelschen Kunstakademie in Frankfurt nach München über. Dort machte er die Bekanntschaft mit Carl Rottmann, dessen Werk einen nachhaltigen Einfluss auf das Schaffen von Caesar Metz ausübte. In den frühen 1850er Jahren ließ sich der Künstler vorübergehend in Rom nieder und bereiste von dort aus Italien, so dass sich die vorliegende Arbeit in diese Schaffensphase einordnen lässt.
