Description
Philippe Mercier, ausgebildet an der Berliner Akademie und im Atelier von Antoine Pesne, war seit ca. 1716 in London als Hofmaler für den Prince of Wales tätig. Er ist vor allem für seine genrehaft-liebenswürdigen Kostümporträts von Kindern bei Spiel, Tanz und gemeinsamem Musizieren bekannt. Das Gemälde war früher François Hubert Drouais zugeschrieben, doch sind dessen Kinderbildnisse in der Auffassung lieblicher. Von unserem Gemälde existiert eine Lithographie des 19. Jahrhunderts “Le cerf volant”, abgebildet in: Henry René Allemagne, Sports and Games of Skill, Librairie Hachette, Paris, 1903.
