Die Darstellung steht hinsichtlich der phantasievollen Gestaltung der Felslandschaft in der Tradition von Salvator Rosa und Alessandro Magnasco. Deren Motivrepertoire fand gegen Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts Eingang in die süddeutsche Kunst, vgl. Werke von Franz Joachim Beich (1665 – 1748), an dessen Schaffen vorliegende Darstellung erinnert. Ein Monogramm B.F. (das F wäre dann als fecit zu verstehen) ist für Beich jedoch bislang nicht nachweisbar.
