Elsasser war Schüler von Wilhelm Hensel und Karl Blechen an der Berliner Akademie; der Einfluss Blechens ist in dieser atmosphärischen, spontanen und ausschließlich mit dem Pinsel entwickelten Darstellung deutlich spürbar. Dies gilt besonders für seine Italienreisen, die Elsasser ab 1831 immer wieder unternahm.
