Description
Der Erzählung in Ovids Metamorphosen (III, 138-253) entsprechend trifft der Jäger Aktäon auf der Jagd auf die unbekleidete Göttin Diana, die in Begleitung ihrer Nymphen in einer Quelle badet. Er wird dies mit seiner Verwandlung in einen Hirsch bezahlen, wie das Geweih auf seinem Kopf bereits andeutet. Das Sujet war im ausgehenden 16. und 17. Jahrhundert außerordentlich beliebt, da es einen mythologischen Vorwand für die Darstellung sinnlicher Frauenkörper bot.
