1831 nahm Reinick sein Studium an der Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf unter Wilhelm von Schadow wieder auf und bereiste 1838 erstmals Italien. Auf dieser Studienreise und aus den vor Ort gewonnenen Eindrücken entstand wohl vorliegendes Gemälde.
