Bereits 1835 hatte Oppenheim den damals siebenundzwanzigjährigen Lionel Nathan de Rothschild gemalt (National Portrait Gallery, London) und ein Jahr später erneut als Bräutigam (The Israel Museum, Jerusalem). Nun schildert er den erfolgreichen Bankier und Politiker, das erste jüdische Mitglied des englischen Parlaments, gegen Ende seines Lebens selbstbewußt vor den Machtsymbolen Säule und Vorhang sitzend. – Leinwand doubliert.
