Das Gemälde gibt eine Szene aus den Metamorphosen des Ovid (Buch X, 708-739) wieder: Verzweifelt klagt Venus um ihren tödlich verwundeten Geliebten Adonis, der sich trotz ihrer bösen Vorahnung auf die Eberjagd begeben hatte.
