Wie auch häufig für seine Porträts wählt Munch hier eine frontale Ansicht des Tierkopfes. So wird der Betrachter direkt mit dem Charakter des Tigers konfrontiert. Das Werk entstand zu einem Zeitpunkt, als Munch sich nach seinem Nervenzusammenbruch in der Klinik des Doktor Daniel Jacobson in Kopenhagen aufhielt. Dort besuchte er häufig den Zoo und skizzierte die Tiere.
– Kaum merklicher Lichtrand. Verso etwas fleckig und an den Kanten mit Montageresten, sonst schön.
