Ausgezeichneter Druck mit der voll sichtbaren Einfassungslinie. Im Gegensatz zu den übrigen Kreuzigungsdarstellungen Schongauers ist szenisches Geschehen in die Darstellung mit einbezogen. Die Trauer der drei Marien und des Johannes kontrastiert mit der roh gebildeten Gruppe der würfelnden Kriegsknechte und lädt den Betrachter zu privater Andacht und Kontemplation ein. – Frühere Mittelfalte fachmännisch geglättet, nur rückseitig erkennbar. Selten in so schöner Erhaltung.
Provenienz: Aus Sammlung H. F. Sewall, New York; verso mit zweimaligem Stempel (Lugt 1309) und weiterem nicht identifizierbarem Sammlerzeichen.
