This painting is part of a small series of fruit still lifes executed in 1949, one of which is very similar to the present work. It shows that Hofer is neither an Expressionist nor a painter of the “Neue Sachlichkeit”: His work has a timeless, classical quality.
Description
Nicht bei Wohlert.
Karl Bernhard Wohlert hat die Echtheit mündlich bestätigt. Das Gemälde entstand 1949 in Zusammenhang mit einer kleinen Serie von Obststillleben, vgl. Wohlert 2251 und 2252. Das zweite der genannten Gemälde ist von sehr großer Ähnlichkeit, sowohl die weiße Schale betreffend, wie auch die Anzahl der Früchte darauf und die nach oben emporragende Birne mit dem Blättchen am Stiel. Das kleine Gemälde zeigt deutlich, dass Hofer eigentlich in keine der Schubladen passt, in die man sein Oeuvre immer wieder stecken wollte. Weder die Neue Sachlichkeit, noch der Expressionismus oder gar der Kubismus taugen. Im Grunde ist seine Malerei zeitlos, den alten Meistern verwandter als den Strömungen der Moderne.
In sehr guter Erhaltung.
