This is the third selfportrait in drypoint, the most important one before
the “Selfportrait with stiff hat”.

Verlegt von R. Piper & Co., München ca. 1922. Dies ist das dritte Selbstportrait Beckmanns in Kaltnadeltechnik, das bedeutendste vor dem “Selbstbildnis mit steifem Hut”, das 1921 entstanden ist. Die nachdenklich-traurige Miene, mit der sich der Künstler hier zeigt, weist einerseits auf die familiäre Situation hin: Seine Frau Minna Tube wurde in diesem Jahr als Wagner-Sängerin nach Graz engagiert und siedelte mit dem Sohn dorthin um, Beckmann blieb alleine in Frankfurt zurück. Außerdem stand Beckmann – wie sein Tagebuch verrät – in diesen Jahren am Beginn einer intensiven Beschäftigung mit der Gnosis, der Kabbala und den Ideen der Rosenkreuzer. Die breiten Blattränder minimal gebräunt, mit einem schwachen Lichtrand.
