Collecting Passion

Dear Friends of the House,

Do you recognise the irresistible urge to own something? That moment when we encounter an object we long to possess, even though we don’t truly need it? A wristwatch—even though we already own several and have only one left wrist. A pair of shoes, despite an overflowing wardrobe, yet this particular pair remains elusive. A piece of art, even if our walls are already adorned. And so, we make the purchase—and feel exhilarated because we have indulged ourselves and fulfilled an inner longing. Such moments of joy are particularly welcome in uncertain times.

But what if this desire gradually evolves into an art collection? Discover how Munich-based Harald Spengler came to realise he had curated a collection rather than merely accumulated artworks, and why Berlin’s Siegfried Grauwinkel decided to part with his after forty years, selling it through Karl & Faber. Interior designer Stefanie Thatenhorst shares insightful tips on how to display art at home. However, caution is advised: not all that glitters is authentic! Learn how specialists authenticate pieces and detect forgeries.

This edition aims to inspire and sustain your passion for art—a commitment we at Karl & Faber have upheld for over a century. With this in mind, we wish you a fulfilling 2025, brimming with artistic discovery.
