A charity auction in cooperation with three partners: Various Others, Kunstverein München and Karl & Faber.
Special circumstances call for breaking new ground. One of these means organising in new infrastructures of solidarity. Discussions about the precarious situation of cultural workers and the financial fragility of institutions in Munich led to an alliance of three partners: Various Others, the Kunstverein München and Karl & Faber.
Various Others is an initiative geared towards cooperation and international collaboration, supported by the non-profit association VFAMK e.V., which focuses on the dialogue between local and international galleries, museums and other art institutions. As a content-oriented forum for contemporary art that takes place every year in September, the self-organised initiative, which has received little support from public funds to date, aims to intensify the exchange between the art scene in Munich, international partners and guests. The Kunstverein München is one of the most traditional and, with almost 1,300 members, largest institutions of its kind in Germany. As a place and platform for the presentation and negotiation of contemporary art and its discourses, its lean organisational form also allows it to react flexibly, quickly and unbureaucratically to current artistic developments and to actively help shape them.
The Corona pandemic confronts us all with unexpected challenges and requires us to think about new perspectives. This led to the idea of collecting works together with supporters – be they artists, patrons or members – and auctioning them off in a benefit auction at the traditional house Karl & Faber, in order to support the local scene and its cultural workers. The result is a selection of works that gives visibility to different actors and their diverse and complex practices and at the same time opens up new paths across institutional boundaries.
