Beschreibung

Ausgezeichnete, kräftige und gegensatzreiche Drucke aus der Folge von insgesamt 135 Blatt inklusive Titel und Frontispiz. Mit dem Exlibris von Hermann Stange auf der Innenseite des Vordeckels.
Die fortlaufende Serie der „Vedute di Roma“ setzt römische Sehenswürdigkeiten ins Bild. Bereits zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts kündigte sich eine Entwicklung an, die man heute unter dem Begriff des ‛Bildungstourismus’ kennt. Die einzelnen Blätter, versehen mit kurzen Erläuterungen, wurden an Romreisende verkauft. Die zwischen Piranesis Ankunft in Rom 1740 und seinem Todesjahr 1778 hergestellten Veduten sind von Piranesis Sohn, Francesco, in einer zweibändigen Ausgabe veröffentlicht worden.
Piranesis Veduten zeigen trotz ihrer enormen Detailliertheit keine naturgetreuen Ansichten römischer Sehenswürdigkeiten und ihrer Umgebung, sondern präsentieren dem Betrachter eine inszenierte, poetisierte Architektur. Großen Wert hat er den Staffage-Figuren beigemessen, die sich vor den Architekturen, wie vor einer Kulisse bewegen. – Alle Bll. mit Handhabungsspuren. Im Randbereich teils etwas wasserrandig und vereinzelt mit kleinen Fleckchen und Knickspuren, einzelne Bll. mit kleinen Risshinterlegungen. Einband an den Ecken und im Falzbereich bestoßen.
